"THE EAR" BY YI ZHOU Ft. PHARRELL WILLIAMS

I dont get this!! Why is Pharrell in it?? Anyway heres the explanation.....

Inspired to Gogols short story, entitled The Nose, from the Petersburg tales, Yi has written her latest short film about the absurd story of the loss of an ear. The ear is actually the key element of the film, shot in RED and partly to be made in 3D animation. Throughout the film, the ear and inner ear as a whole turn themselves into an EarBridge as they get crossed by a bridge. The EarBridge is part of a public project proposal for Baku, Azerbaijan that includes a number of important international contemporary artists. The Ear features Pharrell Williams, music by Ennio Morricone, and costumes by Rick Owens and BBC/Ice Cream.

STILL DONT GET IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

New PS3 X Numark Scratching game!!!!!!!!!!

Best known for real-world DJ tools, Numark today detailed the game controller it's making for Scratch: The Ultimate DJ. Nicknamed the Scratch Deck, the peripheral has a touch-sensitive turntable for its core mix-and-scratch gameplay as well as five drum pads that mimic Akai Pro MPCs and, like the real equipment, are used to trigger samples. The game comes with 60 "battle records" for samples but can take any sample recorded through a USB microphone.

The Scratch Deck can be used either right- or left-handed by inverting the device and works the same way for both the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game. Numark ships the Scratch Deck as part of Scratch DJ in the fall and hasn't priced the controller either by itself or as part of a game bundle.

Blu Interview in the LA Times

Long Beach-based rapper Blu has released two albums in the last year, "The Piece Talks" with Ta'Raach in a project they dubbed C.R.A.C., and "Johnson & Jonson" with producer Mainframe, but it's "Below the Heavens," released in 2007 through Sound in Color and produced by Exile, that first put Inglewood native John Barnes on the map.

Blu, who will perform Sunday at the Blue Cafe in Long Beach, recently signed with Sire Records, owned by Warner Music Group. His manager Jonathan Kim said about the move to the major, “This is one step further to where we would like to see Blu’s career end up." He added that Blu’s working on an album slated for a fall release.

Critics have praised Blu, 25, for his storytelling approach, such as “In Remembrance of Me” where he says, “We pushing whips/now we used to be whipped/rocking chains when we used to be in 'em/still complaining that we victims of the system.”

He also pokes fun at the materialistic, gangsta persona that defines mainstream hip-hop without sounding self-righteous. In “My World Is...," he says, “Females I don’t got ’em/but get ’em with no problem/and I don’t pack stadiums yet I still rock ’em."

After 120 performances in 2008, Blu appeared on the January cover of XXL as an emerging artist. Blu recently spoke with Pop & Hiss about his success so far:

How would you sum up your career so far?

Things are going great. I’ve had good public reception on my first three albums. I’m getting a wide range of mass appeal. The success of the records have been different, but the critical acclaim has been great. I’m passionate about my work, and what inspires my work keeps me passionate. I try to stay inspired.

What keeps you inspired?

God and women. Whatever I do is God. Whatever anyone does is God. Anything he created is inspiration and can be used for inspiration. Women are the greatest creations that God has given me. They drive me crazy.

For people not familiar with your work, break down your three albums.

“Below the Heavens" was all about patience. It took a lot of time. Exile was looking for something closely related to what he used to work on in his old material in "Dirty Science." Where my mind was at the time, we took the time to make a dope record.

What was on your mind at the time?

I was quitting my job and doing it all for the music. I stepped out of everything and gave it all to music and traveling and meeting people. I was writing raps and going to clubs to host events. I was a host when I was 18 at Universal CityWalk and I’d perform at the end of the night. That went well and that’s where I met fans and got a nice foundation.

And what about your other two albums, C.R.A.C.'s "The Piece Talks" and "Johnson & Jonson"?

C.R.A.C. was seven days of schooling. We just went in with no rules and learned from our experiences. We had no limitations and never looked back and that was it. I was doing a lot of drinking and a lot of smoking. That’s when I first started smoking. I was going off that energy. People came by to add to the inspiration. Ta’Raach is an MC first, then he steps into production. Exile is a producer first and then he rhymes. Ta’Raach is coming at it from an MC’s perspective. The songs are formatted for MCs. I was working on "Johnson & Jonson" and "Below the Heavens" around the same time. I was working there and having friends come by while making a dope record. It was raw.

Who are your main hip-hop influences?

Common got me more into rapping. He was personal and made me not afraid to be me. DMX made me want to start rapping off my energy and passion. But I needed to get off that. Common was calm with it. I’m a calm person and I’m not trying to throw my voice out... I’m just rapping. Anything Primo produced is what I’m looking for. And Nas’ "Illmatic" is the type of album I’d want to make.

Mainframe summarized your rapping this way: “A lot of rappers try to fit into a certain mold, but Blu breaks out of it. No matter what he’s rapping about, he finds a way to make the listener relate. He’s conscious but not soft. I think he’s the savior of West Coast hip-hop right now." What’s your reaction to that?

I’m not going to save hip-hop. Hip-hop is safe. There’s a lot of... trying to bring hip-hop down. Hip-hop is a reflection of the world now. It’s not just Harlem. I’ll continue to live my life and make music and continue to be an inspiration.

Akai shows Ableton Live-ready APC40 at NAMM

At the National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) expo, Akai showed the APC40 MIDI control surface it has developed in conjunction with Ableton, making it the first such device to be ready to run out of the box with the Ableton Live music editing software. As there is no need to load drivers, users simply plug in their notebooks via a USB port and can begin mixing or otherwise modifying their music using Ableton Live. The APC40 is being touted as the simplest, most direct hardware interface with the popular software, yet still allows advanced users to assign the board's 40 buttons, knobs and fader controls to any virtual controls in the software.

Each control on the APC40 lights up in a different color to give users an instant indication of clip state. Likewise, the 16 knobs are lined by a ring of LED rings that perform the same functions. Akai points out the APC40 makes controlling music at live events much quicker and easier, taking the connected source, most often a notebook or desktop PC or Mac, out of the equation.

Akai has not released detailed shipping dates nor pricing information for the APC40.

Update: DJ Sneak Back In The Box Insight

After the staggering dig-in-the-crates that was Dave Clarke’s Back In The Box, the legendary DJ Sneak gets his hands dirty delivering his mix for the prestigious series from leading UK house label, NRK Music.

Having somewhat of a renaissance of late due to an infamous back-to-back session with Ricardo Villalobos, Sneak aka Carlos Sosa has a history of continually staying ahead of trends and making house and techno that really matters. This makes him the perfect Back In The Box candidate, where unearthed gems and anthems from days gone by are delivered with a fresh outlook.

Kicking off with Blak ‘n’ Spanish “Call Da Vibe”, Sneaks two CD mix (accompanied by an unmissable unmixed CD) captures the best of an era where US production hallmarks like the heavy 909 drums and latin rhythms collided with European interpretations of house from the likes of Bob Sinclair, Ian Pooley and Daft Punk. Highlights include the latter’s truly classic remix of I:Cube’s ‘Disco Cubism’, Sneak’s own smash ‘You Can’t Hide from Your Bud’ and the ultra rare Mood II Swing remix of BT’s ‘Remember’ but it’s impossible to pick with a tracklisting this perfect.

Swing, shuffle, groove or whatever you’d like to call it, DJ Sneak has it in bucketloads and it runs through this mix like an artery feeding hyperactive organs, or something like that. Quick but smooth mixes and the ability to change atmosphere and tempo mean Sneak’s mix is essential stuff, not just for punters but also for DJs as he can safely be called a DJ’s DJ as well as a floor rocker.

Born Carlos Sosa, he moved with his family from Puerto Rico to Chicago in the early 80s, and by the early 90s was instrumental in the Chicago house renaissance, spearheaded by the legendary Cajual and Relief record labels, and a pool of hot talent such as Paul Johnson, Gemini, Cajmere/Green Velvet, Derrick Carter, Glen Underground and many more. His productions have influenced and innovated, and he was enlisted by fans Daft Punk to contribute to their 2001 single, “Digital Love”. Sneak currently resides in Toronto, Canada,

This is essential, life affirming stuff!

15. Fantom – Faithfull (Original Mix Par Fantom)

DJ Sneak talks us through some of his selections, more detailed commentary will appear in the CD booklet…

Global Communication – The Way
This was a masterpiece of a tune produced by Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard. Global Communication broke thru and created the most incredible vibe with each release they dropped.

Bob Sinclar – Visions Of Paradise
Part of a very smashing LP, Monsieur Sinclar first broke thru with some of the best house music from France. Visions was part of a great selection of really great produced house bangers that are still on rotation.

The Brand New Heavies – Shelter (Danny D Mix)
This is by far one of DJ Sneak’s Top 10 records of house music. Danny D delivered a HUGE deep house classic, The Brand New Heavies were heavy, but this remix broke them to a whole new crowd. Massive Respect!

DJ Sneak – You Can’t Hide From Your Bud
After trying to hide from my bud while working on a beat, I decided to give into my urges and get blunted … this track was the amazing result. I feel that this record best describes my sound as well as the sound that ruled the ‘90’s. U Can’t Hide became the track that let the world know that DJ Sneak was in the house!

Ian Pooley – Higgledy Piggledy
Ian Pooley blasted into the hi life and into many people’s record boxes with this really raw Jackin’ track. This track can get anybody caught sleeping in a club up on their feet and Dancin.

Chris Simmonds - Rush n Soul
One of London’s best kept secrets, my man Chris did the dirty on this track. It’s a very structured & solid DEEP HOUSE jam that will live forever in the history of real house music.

DJ Sneak's "Back In The Box" is out 28th February 2009 on double mix CD, double unmixed CD, vinyl samplers and digital album.

iTunes Removes Anti-Piracy Technology From Music Catalog

During Tuesday’s (1/6) Macworld Expo, Apple Inc. announced that they have come to an agreement with all of the majors – Warner Music Group, Sony BMG, Universal Music and EMI – as well as the independent labels to provide DRM-free music through its iTunes service.

Billboard reports that iTunes has begun to offer 8 million of its songs DRM-free and by March hopes to release 2 million more – which consists of its entire 10 million song catalog. The DRM technology, which stands for digital rights management, was a troublesome anti-piracy protection technology the labels were using that caused computer problems for many consumers.

In addition the computer corporation also shared their arrangement for a new pricing system. In April older tracks will only go for 69 cents, as opposed to the prior 99 cents price tag. Newer songs will continue to cost 99 cents while Billboard hits will be on sale for $1.29.
